Usually on a Saturday I would update this blog with a rant about the church sign out the front of a church on Payneham Road, a church which I drive past on my way to school on Saturday mornings, but today as I sat at the traffic lights looking at the sign in front of the church, I did not get the urge to be violent (as I normally do!).
I went past a few other church signs in my travels today, a Lutheran one on Muller Road, and another Lutheran one on Glynburn Road; the former usually has something good to say - it's usually aimed fair and square at getting the Gospel message out - and today they had a quote from Jesus (I can't remember what it actually was); the latter, on the other hand, is usually pretty corny, however today I didn't want to throttle someone after seeing it.
I firmly believe in giving credit where credit is due, and today, all three churches mentioned deserve at least some credit for not making me want to throw up, especially the one on Muller Road.

Name+Shame #2
A few months ago at Tusmore Park:
"You're invited. Please come."
A little more direct than most, so a gold star there.
But that 'please' makes it seem almost as though you are pleading with me... Are you that desperate? And if you're pleading with the general public like that, it can't be that good, can it?
And such a general invitation seems to, well, cheapen it somewhat.

Tonight at Knightsbridge:
"Two shorten a journey"
I fail to see the relevance to, well, anything.
I don't know... should I go out and get more friends? Should I be getting married? Should I be carpooling? Is this travel advice? Or are you trying to say in a very roundabout and subtle way that Jesus should somehow be involved in my life?
If it's the last one, surely there's a better way to communicate that.
How is this better than a horoscope? It is so general and vague that it means nothing.

Welcome
Let this be the start of a wonderful journey of collectively being mortified at the things people put up on church notice boards in an effort to be noticed.
Over the last few years, I have noticed many church signs that have caused me to cringe (at best), and it always seems to be the same churches.
I don't want this to be misunderstood as being an angry blog, and I do not want to offend you if you are one of those poor people given the task of finding something to put on the church sign. I am a Christian, and a leader in my church community.
I always remember seeing on The Chaser some years back on their ticker that ran at the bottom of the screen a headline that said something like: "Passer-by gets converted by church sign." Or something.
I have to question the purpose behind the church signs that try to be clever. I don't understand it. I assume the purpose is to get people to think and consider coming to church, but these signs make me want to run from church, not join it!
Anyway. Here goes!
